چکیده

Paneth cells were discovered by Schwalbe in 1872 and described more fully by Paneth in 1888. They have been found since in the intestinal mucosa of a wide variety of animals. They are found in the fundus of the crypts of Lieberkuhn and their characteristic feature is the large granules visible in both the fresh and fixed state in the apical or upper part of the cell (Fig. 1). In man they occur naturally in the small intestine, appendix, and colon (Lewin, 1966) and have been reported in the colons of neonates (Hamperl, 1928). An increase in the number of Paneth cells has been reported in inflammatory disease of the appendix

Neoplastic Paneth cells in the experimental murine carcinoma of the small intestine.

The purpose of this study is to elucidate the participation of Paneth cells in experimentally induced adenocarcinoma of the intestine. The rats were fed with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) dissolved in drinking water ad libitum at a concentration of 100 micrograms/ml for 28 weeks. They were sacrificed 12 weeks after the last MNNG administration. A number of tumor cells containing l...

Paneth cell adenoma of the ileum.

A Paneth cell adenoma of the ileum was recently found in a 47-year-old male with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). The patient had years previously been subjected to a total proctocolectomy. Following surgery, endoscopical biopsies were obtained from the duodenum (10 biopsies) in four instances and from the ileal pouch (6 biopsies) in three. All biopsies were taken between 1988 and 2003. He...

The Paneth cell in disease.

A systematic study of the distribution of Paneth cells in disease of the small and large intestine is described. In disease of the small intestine and appendix there is usually a fall in the number of Paneth cells normally present. Occasionally, as in Crohn's disease, there may be proliferation. In disease of the colon the number of Paneth cells is unaltered in functional and developmental diso...

Incidence and significance of argentaffin and paneth cells in some tumours of the large intestine.

The incidence of argentaffin and Paneth cells in epithelial tumours of the large intestine was investigated. Argentaffin cells were found in adenomatous polyps, villus adenomas, polyposis coli, Peutz-Jehgers' polyps, juvenile polyposis, and adenocarcinomas. Paneth cells were not found in metaplastic or juvenile polyps. The crypt unit was destroyed in neoplasia and argentaffin and Paneth cells o...

Colonic Paneth cell metaplasia is pre-neoplastic condition of colonic cancer or not?

ABSTRACTS: BACKGROUND: The carcinogenesis of colorectal cancer has been accepted by a model for a cascade of genetic alterations, named the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. In order to elucidate the carcinogenesis of the colorectal cancer more clearly, the genetic abnormalies of the non-neoplastic mucosal epithelium of the colon and rectum should be investigated. It has been speculated that colonic ...
